Who Level IV armor is for
Level IV plates are typically specified by tactical teams, SWAT, military units and security details whose threat assessment includes high-powered rifle ammunition beyond what Level III plates are rated to stop. Level IV is hard armor: it is worn as plates in a carrier, not as a concealable soft vest.
What the Level IV rating means
Under NIJ Standard 0101.06, Level IV is the highest body armor protection level and covers armor-piercing rifle ammunition. The newer NIJ Standard 0101.07 uses the designation RF3 for the comparable rifle level. Ratings shown here are the manufacturer's rating for each specific product. Before ordering, confirm the exact model's certification, whether the plate is stand-alone or must be worn with a soft armor backer, its cut, dimensions, curve and weight, and that it fits your carrier.
