Who Level III armor is for
Level III armor is commonly specified for patrol rifle response, active-threat kits, SWAT and tactical teams, and security details who need protection against common rifle threats. It is hard armor, worn as plates in a carrier, and is heavier and less concealable than soft Level IIIA armor.
What Level III and Level III+ mean
Under NIJ Standard 0101.06, Level III covers rifle ammunition and sits between handgun-rated Level IIIA and armor-piercing-rated Level IV. The newer NIJ Standard 0101.07 uses the designation RF1 for the comparable level. "Level III+" is not an NIJ level: it is a manufacturer designation for plates tested against additional special threats, which differ by manufacturer. Check each product's own documentation for exactly which threats it was tested against, whether it is stand-alone, and its cut, size, curve and weight.
Compare other protection levels: Level IV body armor for armor-piercing rifle threats, and Level IIIA body armor for handgun threats. You can also browse all body armor.
