Who Level IIIA armor is for
Level IIIA is the common choice for daily-wear duty armor. Concealable IIIA vests suit patrol officers, detectives, plainclothes and undercover personnel, and executive protection details who wear armor under clothing for a full shift. Overt IIIA tactical vests suit corrections and security teams that need handgun protection with load-carrying options.
What the Level IIIA rating means
Under NIJ Standard 0101.06, Level IIIA is the highest handgun protection level. The newer NIJ Standard 0101.07 uses the designation HG2 for the comparable level. Level IIIA armor is not rated for rifle threats. If your threat assessment includes rifles, compare Level III body armor or Level IV body armor. "IIIA+" is a manufacturer designation, not an NIJ level. Confirm each model's certification, coverage, sizing and carrier compatibility, and remember that a 500D fabric rating describes the carrier fabric, not ballistic protection.
