Pepper Spray: Protect Yourself From a Distance

This year has brought one unexpected event after another, with no end in sight.  From the panic caused by the novel coronavirus to the civil unrest caused by racial tensions, 2020 continues to surprise us, and not in a good way.  Many Americans feel uneasy and insecure.  In times like this, people look for ways to control their environment and protect themselves when they can.  Gun and ammunition sales are skyrocketing.  But carrying a gun with you at all times may not be a practical or even a wise idea.  Many states do not allow concealed or open carry.  A gun can also work against you in an attack by threatening the attacker into a quick and dangerous reaction.  Another good option for self-defense is pepper spray.

What is Pepper Spray?

You’ve probably heard of pepper spray but you might not know exactly what it is or how it works.  Pepper spray is a natural product derived from the  fruits of the plant genus Capsicum.  Plants in this genus include chili peppers and other spicy peppers.  Think of how it feels to eat a spicy pepper.  Now imagine how it would feel to have that same spice sprayed in your face.  That’s pretty much how pepper spray works!  Capsaicin is the compound in peppers that makes them spicy.  Pepper spray is produced by isolating capsaicin from peppers and dissolving it in ethanol to make a liquid solution.  When placed under pressure (like in a can), that liquid can be aerosolized into a defensive spray.

How Does Pepper Spray Work?

Pepper spray works by causing a burning sensation and irritation in the eyes, nose, and throat.  When an individual is sprayed with pepper spray, the first effects take place within 10 to 20 seconds.  The pepper spray will cause the trachea to constrict, resulting in involuntary coughing.  With 30 seconds, the pepper spray will cause excessive mucus production in the nose and throat and tears in the eyes.  The individual will cough, possibly gasp for breath, and involuntarily shut their eyes.  After that, the sensation of pain and burning will last for 30 to 45 minutes.

Pepper Spray for Self-Defense

Pepper spray is a great choice for self-defense because it is easy to carry, is a non-lethal threat, and buys you time to get away.  A pepper spray keychain is easy to keep in your pocket or purse for easy access at all times.  You can also purchase larger dispensers, such as a pepper spray gun, fogger, or grenade.  These larger options are good choices for home defense or crowd control.  When used, pepper spray should distract the attacker with pain and discomfort, providing you with critical time to run away and alert authorities.  The fact that it is non-lethal is actually an advantage.  Pulling out a gun on an attacker may frighten him into attacking you, but a simple keychain will not threaten him in the same way.  If you are not sure where to buy pepper spray, many local gun shops carry it, or check out selection at Security Pro USA.
