Bore Thunder/Flash Bang, 12 Gauge
Description: This low cost highly effective device produces a stun/diversion effect by using a flash with an extremely powerful concussion blast from a 12 gauge shotgun muzzle.
History/Background: This device was developed as a stun/diversion and animal control device for use in a variety of applications.
Potential Targets/Applications: Prison/Civil Rioters/Forced Entry
Primary Users: Law Enforcement, Military
Incapacitation Mechanism/Technology: The BORE THUNDER is a 12 gauge cartridge which produces a concussion wave similar to a diversionary grenade.
This round is designed to be aimed at the floor or ceiling at a 45° degree angle and never intentionally at a subject. (Independent testing using NIJ standard 103.1.1 modified showed no penetration in 10% ballistic gelatin at 8 feet).
Physical Data: 12 gauge SAAMI
Performance Characteristics: When fired, the concussion and explosive blast is directional and produces between 175-182 db. Proper application of thisbehavior modification munition will help increase the successful completion of many tactical scenarios.
Delivery Means: 12 gauge shotgun (Not for use with Screw In Chokes)
Operational Strengths: Most officers are trained with the use of 12 gauge. Uses standard issue weapons, requires no special equipment.
Operational Limitations: Both minimal and maximum ranges should be established by test firings conducted at each installation, depending upon tactical conditions and security requirements of each user. Limited Explosive Fire
Hazard when ether, gasoline, alcohol, acetone fumes or other flammable gases or liquids are present. Any device that generates in excess of 5 p.s.i. can cause ear drum rupture.
Documentation Requirements: It is recommended that officers training records be annotated to indicate proper training of less lethal blunt impact munitions use has been accomplished.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Never aim at or above the Sternum. Less Lethal Ammunition can cause contusions, abrasions, broken ribs, concussions, loss of eyes, superficial organ damage, serious skin lacerations massive skull fractures, rupture of the heart or kidney, fragmentation of the liver, hemorrhages, and death.
Medical assistance should be contacted immediately after an actual deployment of a less lethal munition even if no physical injuries appear on subject or subjects.
Penetration, though not a desired effect, can occur regardless of manufacturer or design.
